President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Southern Leyte Rep. Roger Mercado as the next Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) secretary, replacing Mark Villar.
Duterte signed his appointment paper on Tuesday, according to Malacañang.

Mercado took his oath as the agency’s new chief before Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, as shown in Facebook photos shared on Wednesday by his son, Maasin, Southern Leyte Mayor Naccional Mercado.

At present, Mercado serves as vice chairperson of the House Committee on Public Works and ighways.

The lawmaker authored 66 measures and co-authored 26 bills in the 18th Congress, where he is also a deputy majority leader.

He is a member of the ruling PDP Laban, in which Duterte is chairperson.

Mercado is taking over the post vacated by Villar, who resigned after filing last week his Certificate of Candidacy for senator in the May 2022 elections.

Four other Cabinet members have vacated their posts to join the Senate race, namely Salvador Panelo (Chief Presidential Legal Counsel) John Castriciones (Agrarian Reform Secretary), Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan (Information and Communications Technology Secretary), and Emmanuel “Manny” Piñol (Mindanao Development Authority chairperson).

The Palace has yet to announce who would take the helm of their offices.
