Leni can ‘flourish’ on her own — Baguilat

Vice President Leni Robredo’s number of supporters would continue to grow even if other candidates she had talked to will not withdraw their candidacy, Liberal Party (LP) vice president for Internal Affairs Teddy Baguilat Jr. said Wednesday.

“We can always say also that should Isko (Moreno) or Manny (Pacquiao) (withdraw), they will all go to Robredo. Our base will continue to flourish whether Isko or Manny stay or withdraw from the race,” Baguilat said in his interview with ANC.

The former Ifugao representative and now LP senatorial candidate is reacting to the recent remarks by former stalwart Caloocan Rep. Edgar Erice who said that should Robredo withdraw, some 90 percent of her votes would go to Moreno.

Baguilat said that Robredo’s base comes from the same set of people who supported her in the 2016 elections and not from Moreno’s base.

“I don’t think that insulting the one who once served as an inspiration to you is necessary,” he said.

He also said that the reason why the vice president decided to run for president as an independent candidate is for her to be “more inclusive”.

“A lot of groups, her base, unaligned persons or non-partisan organizations who feel they really like to support VP Leni but they don’t want to be identified as liberal,” he said.

He also added that the once-ruling LP respected her decision to shy away from using the color yellow, which has been traditionally associated with the party.
