Internet sensation Gigi de Lana’s debut single “Sakalam” talks nothing but heartache.
Released under Star Music, “Sakalam” is a power rock ballad that speaks of one’s struggle to let go of a relationship despite it being broken. Its title was derived from the Pinoy slang “sakalam,” an inverse of the word malakas (strong).
“Dapat ‘Dahilan’ ang title ng song (The original title of the song was ‘Dahilan’). But ‘Sakalam’ is very catchy. Sakit ay sakalam, meaning yung sakit ay sobrang malakas (the pain is so strong),” De Lana said at a virtual interview held Monday.
“Sakalam” is the first single off her debut full-length album set to drop in 2022. It is co-written and arranged by Gigi Vibes band members Romeo Marquez, Jon Cruz and Erwin Lacsa of Tritone Studios with ABS-CBN Music creative director Jonathan Manalo as producer.
Its music video, directed by Chad Vidanes, was released on 11 October starring Marcus Paterson. As of this writing, it garnered more than 52,000 views.
“It’s important to feel that (heartbreak) again to be strong. Okay lang masaktan. Pansamantala lang yang nararamdaman mo (What you feel is only temporary),” De Lana said.
“Sakalam” currently sits at the top of Spotify Philippines’ Fresh Finds playlist.
De Lana will be part of the Filipino music festival “1MX Dubai” to be held live on 3 December. She will stage her first digital concert “YouTube Music Night” with
ABS-CBN Events in December.
