Six suspected robbers were killed when they shot it out with lawmen trying to accost them in Antipolo City, Rizal, before dawn Thursday, police reported.
The fatalities, who have yet to be identified, were on a brown Kia Rio sedan (ABQ-2011) and a white Yamaha Mio motorcycle with (4967-UG), according to a report from the Rizal provincial police.
Members of the PNP Highway Patrol Group, provincial police, and city police encountered the six along Marcos Highway in Sitio Boso-boso, Brgy. San Jose, around 1:30 a.m.
Earlier, intelligence personnel monitored the six acting “suspiciously” at a gasoline station, so members of the HPG were called in to accost them, the report said.
The six, however, opened fire on the HPG personnel and escaped towards Baras, it said.
This prompted the intelligence and HPG operatives to give chase, while members of the city police and Rizal Highway Patrol Team set up a road block ahead of the gunmen’s route.
As they neared the road block, two of the suspects who were on the motorcycle fell off-balance while their four companions on the sedan crashed into the road’s steel barrier.
Pursuing policemen called on the six to surrender as they were already cornered, but they tried to escape separately towards the thickly vegetated area beside the road while firing their guns, the report said.
This prompted the operatives to return fire until the suspects fell.
A member of the HPG was reportedly hit by a bullet while a patrol car sustained at least two bullet holes during the shootout. (John Roson)
