Magnolia enters semis

Magnolia gave Rain or Shine the boot after taking a 96-86 victory to claim a seat in the semifinals of the 46th Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Philippine Cup at the Don Honorio Ventura State University (DHVSU) gym in Bacolor, Pampanga on Thursday.

Paul Lee and Calvin Abueva showed the way for the Hotshots as they grabbed a best-of-seven series ticket against the survivor between sister teams Meralco and NLEX, which will play in a winner-take-all match on Friday.

Lee paced Magnolia in the offensive end as he finished with game-high 24 points, two rebounds and three assists, while the Kapampangan-native Abueva displayed his defensive prowess on top of his 20 markers and 19 rebounds.

Jio Jalalon also delivered 16 points, six assists and two steals, while Ian Sangalang provided double-double effort of 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Hotshots.

The Hotshots sustained their hold of the momentum they built in the first half to stave off Rain or Shine’s comeback attempt.

The Elasto Painters tried to slash the gap to six, 86-92, with 1:37 to play, but Lee and Mark Barroca were quick to douse cold water on Rain or Shine’s uprising with back-to-back baskets that extended Magnolia’s advantage to 10, with 25 seconds remaining in the game.

James Yap, meanwhile, had his best game of the conference as he finished with 16 points but wasn’t enough to save the Elasto Painters.
