For the National Costume presentation, we wanted a fresher and younger vibe by doing a fashion music video,” said Voltaire Tayag, director of communications for the Miss Universe Philippines (MUPh) pageant.
“We featured modernized forms of the Manila Carnival Queen theme that all the ladies were required to have. Having a mix of old traditions presented in a new way makes for a more interesting experience. It’s well-lit and you can appreciate the costumes in totality and in close-up shots of the details. You can watch it repeatedly like a music fashion video.”
This year’s National Costume theme is a celebration of a bygone era of elegance and sophistication — the Manila Carnival Queens. They are the first Filipino beauty queens whose names are still remembered by historians and pageant aficionados.
“Their images wearing elaborate and intricate costumes live on in black and white photos. So we wanted to bring these back to life and imagine how they would have looked today, Tayag added.
