Ormoc targets full inoculation by December

Gomez said the city has already inoculated almost 100,000 city residents since the start of the vaccination drive.

TACLOBAN CITY — The local government of Ormoc City in Leyte announced that it is targeting to complete 100 percent coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccination among its population by December this year.

Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gordon said that the Covid-19 jabs that the local government purchased earlier this year already started arriving and noted that the city has an ample supply of vaccines which is enough to include children 12 years old and above in the ongoing vaccination drive.

“Our target is hopefully by December we have already inoculated 100 percent of the general public,” Gomez said. “We are also just awaiting advice from the Department of Health (DoH) if we can already start the vaccination among children 12 years old and above.”

The local chief executive revealed that they have already inoculated almost 100,000 city residents since the start of the vaccination drive.

Data from the Health department in Eastern Visayas as of 16 September disclosed that a total of 32,711 residents of Ormoc have completed the two doses while 59,507 have received the first dose.

Aside from the regular vaccines that the national government has allocated through the CoVAX facility, the city government has also started receiving the vaccines that it purchased early this year.

In January this year, the Ormoc City government signed a memorandum of agreement with AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals for the purchase of vaccines 270,000 doses of its Covid-19 vaccine.

The local government unit has earmarked P350 million for the city’s vaccination program that will cover vaccines and expenses for syringes, cotton, alcohol and storage.

Gomez credits his political machinery, the Ormoc Development Team, for pushing for the purchase of vaccines.

“If we did not decide to buy vaccines, we will just be waiting for whatever is available and how much the CoVAX facility will allot for the city,” Gomez said. “I just pity our neighboring municipalities because some were only able to inoculate only around 5,000 people until now while we have already vaccinated 100,000.”

Based on the 2020 census, Ormoc City has a total of 230,998 inhabitants, making it the second most-populous city in Leyte province after the provincial capital of Tacloban.
