Daily Tribune’s motoring ed tops national reservists’ literary tilt



Daily Tribune’s motoring section head and military reservist, PO2 Ronald de los Reyes of the Philippine Naval Reserve Command recently topped the essay-writing competition of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) National Reservist Week, an annual activity of the military which aims to boost the reservists’ program of the government.

His article which highlights the importance of the country’s reservist program in self-development, protection and nation-building was chosen by senior officials of the AFP among a pool of entries all over the country.

The nationwide yearly one-week activity is joined by the branches of the military, such as the Philippine Army, Philippine Airforce and the Philippine Navy. Here, they challenge each other in a healthy competition which promotes camaraderie and team spirit through sports and physical activities.

However—amid the pandemic—face-to-face events for its 42nd iteration this year were recently prohibited and were replaced by other non-physical activities, such as: photo exhibit, poster-making and essay-writing contests.

It likewise served as a venue to recognize other reservists’ achievements, like the AFP Reservist of the Year Field Grade Level and Coy Grade Level which were awarded to the Philippine Navy’s Captain Aldrin Cuña (21st Naval Group Reserve) and ER Cañero, respectively. Other awardees were also recognized in the ROTC and other military units.

The awarding ceremony, held at the Emilio Camp Aguinaldo headquarters in Quezon City, was graced by Department of Public Works and Highways’ Assistant Secretary, John Versoza, BGen Marceliano Teofilo (PA), MGen Eugenio Hernandez PN(M) and other military officials.

Currently, there are 1,100,000 reservists actively serving the government all over the country.
