The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Tuesday announced that a third of over 97,345 vote-counting machines (VCM) have been refurbished for the 2022 national and local elections.

Comelec chair Sheriff Abas revealed that there are already 36,239 VCM which have been refurbished — including battery replacement, cleaning of parts, replacement of malfunctioning accessories subjecting machines to diagnostics and stress test.

Abas noted that despite the lockdowns, the poll body is still on track to meet the deadline of refurbishing machines by November and assured the public that they are complying with the minimum health protocols set by the Inter-Agency Task Force.

He added that all warehouse personnel from Comelec and Smartmatic were vaccinated.
