Department of Transportation (DoTr) Secretary Arthur Tugade led the inauguration of the completed and fully-rehabilitated Siquijor Airport on Thursday in line with the Duterte administration’s Build, Build, Build flagship program.
Tugade was joined by Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) director general Jim Sydiongco, Siquijor Governor Zaldy S. Villa, Siquijor District Representative Jake Vincent S. Villa, Vice Governor Mei Ling Quezon-Brown, Siquijor Municipal Mayor Richard Quezon, Maria Municipal Mayor Meynard Asok and other local government officials.
“The way to making Filipino life convenient and comfortable is to create connectivity and mobility. It is for that reason why we are expanding your community airport and seaport. We want connectivity and mobility, which is the mandate of President Rodrigo Duterte,” said Tugade.
He added that the P34.79-million
project — which includes the construction of a new Passenger Terminal Building (PTB), powerhouse and vehicular parking area — started last 1 March 2018 and was fully completed last 30 July 2020.
Sydiongco, on the other hand, said that the upgraded of Siquijor Airport is expected to give a boost to the economy of Siquijor, as well as provide travelers with convenient access to one of the country’s extraordinary tourism spots.
He added that the new and modern PTB now can cater up to 60 passengers at any given time.
CAAP also completed the repair and maintenance of the airport’s perimeter fence, construction of a concrete path walk, provision of runway, taxiway, and apron markings and further improvement of the passenger terminal building’s interior and exterior last 21 August this year and it finished earlier than the target completion date.
The DoTr and CAAP also proposed more developments in Siquijor airport such as the extension and asphalt overlay of runway.
