Miss Universe Philippines (MUP) candidate Simone Nadine Bornilla, who represents the island province of Marinduque, proudly declared that she is an LGBTQ+ ally and banners her two gay fathers.

In a short video introducing herself for the competition, she said: “I think one thing that definitely makes me unique is that I grew up in a gay family. I was raised by two men and over the course of my life, looking back, I don’t think I would’ve had it any other way. They’re definitely the inspiration in everything that I do. With this being said, I offer my performance not only to just them but also to the people of my stepfather’s home province as well as the LGBTQ+ community as I am an ally.”

In the same video, 18-year-old Bornilla also revealed that she will soon be a Medical Biology student at De La Salle University because “I’ve always dreamt of becoming a doctor,” and that she is into ballet, musical theater, choral competitions, and beauty pageants.

She also highlighted her LGBTQ+ background and advocacy in her well-liked social media accounts in Instagram (@simonebornilla) and Facebook.

Her 11 August post declared: “I was raised by two gay men and I can proudly say that I am nurtured with unconditional love and support. I am your LGBTQ+ ally in the Miss Universe Philippines 2021 stage.”

The following day she posted: “I myself experienced discrimination first hand. I was not accepted in an International Catholic School when I was an incoming Grade 4 student simply because I came from a gay family.
Surprisingly, Colegio San Agustin-Makati which, is also a Catholic School, accepted me with open arms.

“That’s why I want to be a voice for the LGBTQ+ community. No one should neither be judged based on your sexual preference nor the sexual orientation of your family.

“I am your LGBTQ+ ally on the Miss Universe Philippines 2021 stage.”

Bornilla has always been very appreciative of her parents. In her Instagram on 16 June 2019, she posted a picture of her with her fathers and wrote a sweet dedication to them, while competing in the Miss Teen International pageant: “To the two men I love the most, [f]or all the times I left it unsaid, thank you. Thank you for being patient with me and

kuya Jesus Bornilla (mostly kuya) even when we’d make it difficult for the both of you. Thank you for always being so supportive in whatever we choose to do. Thank you for always being there despite your very busy schedules.

Thank you for believing in us when we don’t believe in ourselves. Thank you for pushing us to do things we never knew we were capable of. Thank you for always hearing me out. Thank you for being capable of being a close friend and a parent at the same time. Thank you for always going above and beyond. I am the person I am today because of the both of you, and I’m proud of having you both as my parents. Happy fathers’ day po daddies! Kuya and I love the both of you so much po.”

Bornilla was crowned Miss Teen International Philippines in 2018 at 15 years old and competed in the Miss Teen International 2018 in India where she awarded Best in National Costume and the Miss Teen International Asia and Oceana title. Now, she and 29 other contestants will compete at the Miss Universe Philippines 2021, which culminate in a coronation night on 25 September.
