Petecio claims Olympic silver

Published

Nesthy Petecio settled for the Olympic silver medal after bowing against Sena Irie of Japan in the finals of the women’s featherweight event in Kokugikan Arena on Tuesday.

The Filipina puncher absorbed a unanimous decision loss, with four judges giving 29-28 while another official had it 30-27 for the hometown bet.

Still, it was a gallant stand for Petecio as she nabbed the national boxing team’s first-ever medal since Mansueto Velasco’s runner-up finish in the Atlanta Games in 1992.

The Filipino boxers still have the chance to claim a gold medal as Eumir Marcial and Carlo Paalam will see action in their respective semifinal matches on 5 August.
