Taytay seniors get flu shots

Senior citizens in Taytay, Rizal were given free anti-flu vaccines to boost their immunity, Mayor Joric Gacula said yesterday.

The mayor urged the town’s senior citizens to get the flu vaccines as they prevent the development of symptoms similar to those of Covid-19, such as fever, cough, body aches, fatigue and sore throat.

During the rainy season, senior citizens are more prone to contracting flu and flu-like diseases, he said.

Over 250 elderly residents of Barangay Muzon benefited from the said health program of the local government. Vice Mayor Mitch Bermundo visited the event and distributed masks to the elderly.

The Center for Disease Control said studies show that people 60 years and older are at greater risks of serious flu complications compared with young healthy adults as human immune defenses become weaker with age.

As people age, they may be at a higher risk of complications from influenza. For this reason, senior citizens are advised to get an anti-flu vaccine each year.
