United City FC settled for a 1-1 draw against Beijing Guoan FC to open its group stage campaign in the AFC Champions League in Tashkent, Uzbekistan late Saturday.
UCFC stood its ground against the Chinese powerhouse and even controlled the first half only to a potential win slip through in late in the final half.
Despite settling for a stalemate, the UCFC secured the much-needed point for an impressive debut in its ACL campaign.
Skipper Stephan Schrock opened the scoring after curling a top-corner shot in the 28th minute, putting the four-time Philippines Football League champion squad in control throughout the first half.
But despite the Filipinos’ dominating possession, Beijing was still able to break the scoresheet after team captain Liang Shawn’s free kick attempt slipped past UCFC goalie Anthony Pinthus in the 73rd minute of the match.
United City scheduled to face Kawasaki Frontale FC of Japan next on 2 July.
