Kaya FC Iloilo opened its AFC Champions League campaign on a flat note as it suffered a 1-4 domination against BG Pathum United FC in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday.
Shaky first half proved to be too costly as Kaya failed to stop a rampaging Pathum momentum, which resulted to the Filipinos’ first taste of defeat in the most prestigious club tournament in Asia.
With Pathum enjoying a 2-0 lead in the first half, the Philippines Football League (PFL) runner-up squad found itself in a world of trouble after Brazilian forward Diogo Santo Luis tucked a brace with a free kick in the 50th minute, extending their lead to 3-0.
Thai forward Teersil Dangda quickly followed up and also made a brace for himself in the 59th minute, courtesy of a stunning pass from Diogo.
It took Kaya 82 minutes before skipper Marwin Angeles hit a thunderous left-footed strike that gave his team their first ever goal in the prestigious tourney.
Despite the loss, the Iloilo-based club still has the chance to bounce back on its second group stage match against Vietnamese powerhouse Viettel FC on 29 June in Bangkok.
