Singson joins NPC

Former Ilocos Sur Gov. and now Narvacan town Mayor Luis “Chavit” Singson is now a member of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) party and took his oath before Senate President Vicente Sotto III, the party’s chair.

The ceremonial event was held at the NPC clubhouse in Quezon City on Saturday morning or less than a year before the 2022 national and local elections.

“Very strong asset! He not only governs Ilocos Sur, he is presently the president of the Municipal Mayor’s Leagues of the Philippines,” Sotto told media when he shared photos of the new NPC member.

Since 2019, Singson serves as the National President of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP), which comprised of at least 1,400 municipal mayors.
In a radio interview on Saturday, Sotto disclosed that he invited Singson to join NPC two to three months ago when the latter told him that he currently does not belong to any national political party.

“He only belongs to local parties, now he wanted to be a member of a national party. I told him that NPC welcomes him,” Sotto recalled their previous phone conversation.
It was on 17 June when Sotto received another phone call from Singson, saying that he is ready to take his oath and be “united” with NPC.

With Singson’s membership to NPC, there is a good chance that mayors belonging to LMP will also join the party, according to Sotto.

“Singson is right when he said in an interview that NPC is the most stable political party (in the Philippines). We’re solid regardless of which political party the seating president belongs (to),” Sotto stressed.

Singson served as the provincial chair of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) but he resigned in 2010 when he decided to endorse then-Senator Manny Villar as a presidential candidate and standard-bearer of the Nacionalista Party (NP).

In 2013, he endorsed candidates of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA).

Singson has been a politician for more than 30 years, serving as Ilocos Sur governor, congressman, Vigan City councilor, and Narvacan municipal councilor.
