Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Secretary Salvador Panelo on Friday slammed boxing icon and Senator Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao over his latest remark against the supporters of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio pushing her presidential run in 2022.
“Wait a minute, who stops you from running? Mayor Sara will not be a hindrance to you if she decides to run. Nobody is stopping you from running, Senator Manny,” Panelo said in his daily online program “Counterpoint”.
Pacquiao had told those seeking the presidential daughter’s decision to run for the highest post to “give others a chance”.
Panelo, however, said individuals who have intentions of running for government posts should just do it.
“I urge you to run — all of you. It’s an open field and it is your constitutional right,” he stressed.
Panelo also urged the neophyte senator to study first before giving unsolicited advice on delicate matters like issues on the West Philippine Sea which he said requires a “deep” understanding.
“Do not go further the level that you reached. Do not go further with what you’ve studied or you will get criticized. Because matters like geopolitics are deep. You need an extensive study about it, you cannot just meddle with it,” he added.
The statement came after Duterte hit Pacquiao alleged that the president’s response to the Chinese maritime aggression is “lacking”.
Panelo also disclosed receiving reports that Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno is also eyeing a shot at the presidency.
“We have received reports that Mayor Isko, who wants to scrap the use of face shields, also wants to run. Run,” he said.
“If you want to experience defeat, run. But don’t tell me I didn’t warn you because it is by season. It is not yet your time, wait for yours,” he added.
