Vice President Leni Robredo has “bolstered” the position of the 1Sambayan Coalition that there should only be one opposition candidate for president in the 2022 national elections.

Howard Calleja, 1Sambayan convenor, told the Daily Tribune on Sunday that they are thanking Robredo over her statement on 28 May that she will only throw her hat in the presidential ring if she’ll be the lone opposition candidate for the post.

Calleja said that 1Sambayan’s stance extends to the opposition having a single slate for all elective positions to challenge the administration’s bets next year.

“The 1Sambayan welcomes the statement of VP Leni because that means the public will have an alternative in the coming elections,” Calleja said.

“We are very thankful that she is one (with us) in going ahead and in helping 1Sambayan in forging this unity among the alternative and democratic forces,” he added.

Robredo has said the opposition having multiple candidates for president will only ensure the victory of the administration.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go are among the personalities in the administration seen to have good chances should they seek the presidency.

Just like the opposition, a single administration bet for president is also being seen by political analysts as critical in ensuring victory and a continuation of Duterte’s governmental thrust.

A top-of-the-mind candidate for president for the opposition as the highest-ranking government official from the Liberal Party, Robredo said in November that she preferred a local post.

While Robredo’s name was among those included in the shortlist of candidates being considered by 1Sambayan, the coalition clarified it will still issue an official pool of nominees by 12 June.

The group eyes to have at least five names, but Calleja said they are still awaiting the decisions of two to three more politicians whether they are interested in running for president.

Upon releasing the shortlist, 1Sambayan said it will conduct an open survey as the basis in choosing their official candidates for President, Vice President and senators. The survey will run from June to mid-September.
