P2.94M smuggled cigarettes seized

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities here reported the arrest of six individuals caught smuggling imported cigarettes worth P2.94 million in this city and in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay province during separate operations.

Police Regional Office (PRO-9) Director Police Brig-Gen Ronaldo Genaro Ylagan revealed that Marine soldiers intercepted a motorized wooden watercraft or “Jungkong” loaded with 50 master cases of smuggled Canon brand cigarettes with an estimated market value of P1.5 million.

Arrested were Jabal Tingkahan, Aesibal Tingkahan and and Isnad Laki, all residents of Maluso town in Basilan Province.

The soldiers intercepted the cargoes at the high seas of Little Sta. Cruz Island.

Meantime, authorities from the Municipal Police Station intercepted a passenger van at a police checkpoint in Purok Ipil-Ipil, Barangay Magdaup in Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The van was loaded with 47 assorted master cases of smuggled cigarettes which include 25 master cases of Fort, 21 master cases Cannon, one master case of Astro with a combined worth P1.41 million According to Ylagan, the contraband was loaded at a Nissan passenger van escorted by the suspects identified as Patrick Muyargas, Arsimar Alisani and Sabtorin Sebastian.
