Daulah member waves white flag

ZAMBOANGA CITY — An alleged member of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group surrendered to the military and turned over his high powered firearms in Madalum, Lanao del Sur on Monday afternoon.
In a statement, Armed Force of the Philippines-Western Mindanao Command commander Lt. Gen Corleto Vinluan, Jr. identified the surrenderee as Abu Hamza 21, a resident of Barangay Liangan 1, Madalum town in Lanao del Sur.

Hamza handed over his M653 (baby armalite) rifle with one short steel magazine loaded with 18 rounds of live ammunition.

According to Vinluan, Hamza was operating in the municipalities of Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte.

The Daulah member surrendered to Lt. Col. Fernando Payapaya, commanding officer of the 51st Infantry Battalion (IB) stationed in Barangay Dilausan, Madalum town.

During the initial debriefing, Hamza claimed that he decided to surrender after realizing that what they are doing are mere acts of terrorism, but added later that the late Abu Dar’s successor — Faharudin Hadji Satar alias Zacharia and Abu Bakar — were incompetent to lead the group.

Military records showed that Abu Dar was killed in an encounter with the government forces in 2019 and Abu Hamza laid low after the death of Abu Dar.

For this year, a total of three DI-MG remnants were neutralized — one of which was killed while two surrendered.
