Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Secretary Salvador Panelo on Monday responded to criticisms on his “usual market day”, saying riding jeepneys is “ordinary” for him.
Panelo in his daily online program “Counterpoint” said he has been riding jeepneys during his student life at the University of the Philippines. As for purchasing goods, he said it has been his share in their household chores.
“Firstly, we have been in charge of buying goods even at the start of our married life,” he said. “Riding jeepneys is very ordinary for us. When I was a student in UP, I was riding jeepneys. It is no big deal.”
Panelo added that he was unaware that someone was taking pictures of him inside the jeepney because he was too busy with his phone.
“What I didn’t know, apparently somebody took photos of me without my knowledge, and then the media got it. In simpler words, it has become an online news,” he added.
Panelo also said he decided to ride a jeepney to personally observe if people follow minimum health protocols.
“What I don’t understand is why it has become news. Let us concentrate more on what is happening,” he added.
On Sunday afternoon, photos of the former Palace mouthpiece on a jeepney on his way to Agora market in San Juan City quickly spread on social media.
Other photos showed Panelo talking to a fish vendor at the wet market.
