Jesuit lawyer, constitutionalist and writer Father Joaquin Bernas passed on Saturday, 6 March. He was 88.
Bernas’ death was confirmed and announced on Radio Veritas by anchor priest, Fr. Emmanuel Alfonso, SJ-executive director of Jesuit Communications.
Bernas, a known columnist writer of another broadsheet, died at 1:45 a.m. at his residence inside the Ateneo de Manila University in Quezon City.
Prior to his death, he had been confined at The Medical City for more than six weeks and was discharged on 4 March.
Father Bernas was a member of the Constitutional Commission that created the 1987 Constitution. He also became the dean of the Ateneo de Manila Law School, and president of the Ateneo de Manila University for nine years since 1984.
He was born on 20 June 1932 and was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1965.
