Authorities arrested a couple allegedly serving as combatants of the New People’s Army, during an operation in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.
Arrested were Ramel Aguire alias “Jhonny,” 47, and Jenelyn Abao alias “Pendang,” 29, residents of Purok 6, Brgy. Pangi, said Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat, Caraga regional police director.
Both are members of the Guerilla Front Committee 30 under the North-Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee, he said.
Personnel of the city police arrested Aguirre at the couple’s home around 5:10 p.m., while Abao was arrested in Brgy. Bongtod several minutes later.
The operation was carried out on an arrest arrant for murder and multiple attempted murder.
According to Caramat, the cases stemmed from the encounters between operatives of the Surigao del Sur Police’s Provincial Mobile Force Company and NPA members in Brgy. Buenavista, Tandag, on September 28, 2020.
A policeman, identified as Pat. Jennis Mark Encinas, was killed in the first of two skirmishes with the rebels.
“Five months after the death of Patrolman Encinas, finally justice is being served,” said Caramat.
