Suspected members of the New People’s Army burned heavy equipment being used to build a farm-to-market road in Malimono, Surigao del Norte, police said.
Brig. Gen. Romeo Caramat, Caraga regional police director, said at least seven armed men carried out the attack around 11 a.m. Wednesday, in Brgy. Binocaran.
They poured gasoline on a dump truck and backhoe, then set fire on these, he said.
The said equipment, owned by a construction firm based in Surigao City, were being used to build a road that will facilitate the transport of agricultural and fisheries products to the markets, Caramat said.
“The construction of the road in Brgy. Binocaran is temporarily stalled because of the attack,” he said
Damage left by the incident was estimated at P5.95 million.
Investigation indicated that the attackers were NPA members under Guerilla Front 16B of the Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee.
Probers are looking into the possibility that the attack stemmed from the construction company’s refusal to give in to the rebels’ extortion, Caramat said.
Caramat condemned the incident and directed local police to expedite the filing of charges against the attackers.
