ASF outbreak in 2 Misamis Oriental towns contained




After a week-long culling operation in two towns of Misamis Oriental, the Provincial Veterinary Office said Wednesday that the outbreak of the African Swine Fever (ASF) has been contained.
Dr. Benjamin Resma, Provincial veterinarian said the anti-ASF task force has accounted for over 900 hogs within the 500-meter radius of the ASF ground zero in barangay Jampson in Initawo town and barangay Pagawa in Manticao town.
“We have contained the outbreak as blood samples from other areas in the affected towns yielded a negative results of the ASF virus,” he said in a radio interview.
He said the outbreak was last reported in barangay Dikilaan in Manticao but only 19 hogs were accounted for and culled on Tuesday.
At least 300 affected farmers have been compensated.  They were given P2,000 from the provincial government and P5,000 each from the Department of Agriculture.
Resma said quarantine checkpoint has been tightened up in the border of Cagayan de Oro City where ASF outbreak has affected at least seven barangays.
The affected barangays in the city include San Simon, Agusan, Manbuaya Baikinong Macasandig, Puerto and Tablon.
At least 1,000 backyard hogs were culled.
