One person died and 33 others were hospitalized because of an outbreak of diarrhea in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, authorities confirmed Saturday.
Thirty-four people from Brgy. Butuan were admitted to the Tomas Lachica District Hospital, but one among them died, the Department of Health-Davao region said in a report.
Twenty-five other persons are being “closely monitored” in the community, it said.
“The probable source of infection is through contaminated water,” DOH-Davao said, citing information from municipal health officer Dr. Amparo Lachica.
According to the agency, the Regional Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (RESU) is set to conduct further investigation and assessment of the area, health status of the families affected, as well as needs of local health facilities and the community.
DOH-Davao has sent medicines and intravenous fluids to the Tomas Lachica District Hospital where the patients were admitted.
Jerry cans for water storage and chlorine granules were also provided to the affected barangay, it said.
The agency reminded residents to make sure that the water they will be drinking is safe, and regularly wash their hands with soap to reduce the risk of diarrhea.
