Young Filipino visual artist wins ‘portfolio’ prize

The grant is for the chosen artist to develop a project of importance, or financially support himself/herself during an artistic residency abroad, or simply to count on an amount enough to allow him/her to continue working in the studio without worries.

The first winner of the 2020 Portfolio Artist Prize is a young Filipino artist, Issay Rodriguez. She received a grant of P300,000 in an intimate ceremony at the Drawing Room Gallery on 14 December.

Present at the ceremony were the project’s creators: art enthusiast and Italian ambassador Giorgio Guglielmino and collector Hugo Bunzl, together with Cesar Villalon, director of the Drawing Room and representatives of the Silverlens Gallery, which represents Rodriguez.

The project consists of a portfolio of limited-edition works by 10 Filipino artists: At Maculangan, Gina Osterloh, Kawayan de Guia, Kiri Dalena, Manny Montelibano, Neal Oshima, Paul Pfeiffer, Poklong Anading, Wawi Navarroza and Yason Banal.

Through the sale of the portfolio, entitled “2020,” funds were raised for grants given to up-and-coming artists chosen by a special jury.

The grant is for the chosen artist to develop a project of importance, or financially support himself/herself during an artistic residency abroad, or simply to count on an amount enough to allow him/her to continue working in the studio without worries.

The project was made possible with the collaboration of the Drawing Room Gallery; project director Angel Velasco Shaw; and Katya Guerrero who took care of the operational and logistic parts relating to the production of the portfolio.

Rodriguez is a multidisciplinary artist whose current practice focuses on projects that deal with themes of humanism, ecology, sociology and anthroposophy.

Through arts-based research and community engagements enabled by artist residencies and interdisciplinary collaborations, she is able to work on projects that allow her to think about how thoughts, emotions or values can be explained or concretized through art and technology.

She also creates drawings and cyanotypes. She has had several solo and group exhibitions.

In addition, she has received prestigious residencies at Belles Artes Projects, Asia in Darwin in Indonesia and GasWorks in London.

Organizers hope to be able to continue selling the portfolios in order to grant more awards by the end of January 2021.
