3 rebels killed, 1 captured in clashes in Negros Oriental, Surigao Sur, Northern Samar

Three members of the New People’s Army were killed and another was captured in separate clashes with government forces in Negros Oriental, Surigao del Sur, and Northern Samar, the military reported.

Two male rebels were killed when members of the 11th Infantry Battalion clashed with their group in Sitio Libjo, Brgy. Napacao, Siaton, Negros Oriental, around 7:25 p.m. Thursday, according to a report from the Army’s 302nd Brigade.

The two are still unidentified, but are believed to be “remnants” of the Southeast Front of Komiteng Rehiyon Negros, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor (KR-NCBS), the report said.

Capt. Francis Salcedo, 11th IB civil-military operations officer, said soldiers encountered four rebels in the hinterlands, and intermittent firefight lasted for almost 30 minutes.

“Ito pong Southeast Front ay considered na weakened na. Sa estimate po natin ay pito na lang ang tao nito at yun po ang inaalam natin ngayon kung nasaan yung tatlo pa,” he said by phone.

Aside from the slain rebels’ bodies, troops recovered an M653 rifle, a caliber-.45 pistol with magazine, a bandolier with two magazines for M14 rifles, and three backpacks with medical supplies.

Meanwhile, a female NPA member was killed when troops of the 75th Infantry Battalion encountered rebels in Tago, Surigao del Sur.

Soldiers encountered about 10 rebels in Purok Quarry, Sitio Kabalawan, Brgy. Anahao Daan, around 5 p.m. Wednesday, the 75th IB said in a report.

Troops recovered the still unidentified rebel’s body, along with an AK-47 rifle.

Two bandoliers, nine magazines with a total of 167 rounds of live ammunition, 50 meters of detonating cord, cellular phones, subversive documents, and back packs with personal belongings and food were also found at the site.

On the morning of the same day, another rebel was captured after getting wounded in a skirmish with the 43rd Infantry Battalion in Brgy. Happy Valley, San Isidro, Northern Samar.

Jonas Dela Torre, a team leader under Front Committee 2 of Sub-Regional Committee Emporium, Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee, was found along with his AK-47 rifle, the Army’s 8th Infantry Division said.
