Christmas traditions live on

CLASSIC fruitcake

We associate Christmas with festive things and happy memories from our childhood. For one, there is Santa Claus, the jolly, white-bearded, “voluptuous” guy in a red suit who goes, “Ho, ho, ho, merry Christmas!” and rewards good kids with generous gifts on Christmas Eve.

And then there are candy canes, delicious cookies, gingerbread houses and fruitcakes that promise to fill our palates with delight. And don’t forget the images that we also closely associate with the Yuletide season.

The French Baker tries to make some of our Christmas food traditions come alive by offering classic fruitcake, gingerbread house and Pure Danish Butter Cookies in a glass jar.

Classic Fruitcake (P498) in a 454-gram loaf follows an Old-World recipe reminiscent of the traditional Christmas celebration of years past. It comes studded with imported glazed fruits, raisins, walnuts and cherries, made moist and flavorful with French brandy and spices. It goes well with wine, coffee or tea and, when frozen, stays fresh and robust for around six months. The loaf I got last November, for example, has an expiration date of 30 April 2021.

The lovely gingerbread house (P898) is the ultimate childhood rendition of a white Christmas. The cottage, made of gingerbread, is glued together with royal icing that resembles snow on a chilly winter’s day. Christmas images — reindeer, snowman, gingerbread boy, candle and colorful candies and chocolates — dot the roof and the walls. If you find the gingerbread house too beautiful to eat, you would be glad to know that, when stored at room temperature, the edible centerpiece can last until 15 January 2021.

These Christmas food traditions, however, are not the only holiday goodies that French Baker offers this year. The bakery chain has just released chiffon cakes in three flavors — ube, mocha and lemon — which should also make good gift ideas this season.

A tradition at French Baker is the huge glass jar of Pure Danish Butter Cookies (P850) in various shapes — wreath, heart, Christmas tree and star. Priced at P850 per jar, it weighs one kilogram.

All three Christmas items are available for the whole month of December at all French Baker stores, or you can order them for delivery online via www.thefrenchbakeronline.com. This delivery option makes it safer and more convenient to shop for your Christmas gifts during this pandemic.

Also making it to the shelves in time for the Christmas season are delicious treats such as caramel bars, Food for the Gods, walnut brownies, ube streusel bars and cream puffs. Except for the cream puffs, which come in six-piece clear packs for P160, all these sweet treats are packaged in 10s for P190 per clear pack.

Unlike the classic fruitcake, gingerbread house and jar of Pure Danish Butter Cookies, these yummy bars are available even after the Christmas season.

Pandemic or not, people will celebrate Christmas, and though parties and gatherings must be subdued and modest this year for our own safety, no one should be denied the simple joys of sitting down together and enjoying a bite or two of our favorite sweet treats. After all, it’s Christmas!
