The relevance of art has been questioned time and again, especially amid a pandemic.

Yet for many, the act of creating works of art has become a sanctuary for the artists and an avenue to help others in these uncertain times.

The local art community has been taking an active role in fundraising for various causes.

This year alone, it has supported political activists, as well as victims of Typhoons Ulysses and Rolly.
Now comes a group of artists doing a benefit for indigenous Filipinos.

Olivia D’Aboville, Kawayan de Guia, Sam Penaso, Emmanuel Santos, Jonahmar Salvosa, Benjie Cabangis, among others, are joining Salcedo Auctions-Gavel&Block’s online auction, “Earth Exhibit,” in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature-Philippines (WWF-PH) and Bid for the Future (BFF).

Auction proceeds will benefit over 200 Dumagat and their families living in the Ipo Dam Watershed.

The Ipo Watershed is a vital link in the Angat-Umiray-Ipo watersheds system which supplies over 95 percent of the water needs of Metro Manila.

The protection of this area is crucial in ensuring water security today and for future generations of Filipinos.

The Dumagat are in charge of patrolling the 6,600 hectares of forest land that surrounds the area.

Salcedo Auctions managing director Victor M. Silvino said his team is excited to work with WWF-PH: “There’s always been a close link between art and nature.

Artists either take inspiration from nature or take  their paint pigments from it.

But more than that, it’s the power of art to communicate ideas and experiences that this partnership highlights.

With WWF, we’re helping artists and collectors find new ways to share and discuss important issues about nature and community,”

The public may join the “Earth Exhibit” online auction on 5 December at 2 p.m.
