Valenzuela City Mayor Rex Gatchalian on Sunday said the local government will not be putting up Christmas trees and holiday decorations this year to prevent people from violating the ban on the mass gathering.
“To those who ask why there are still no Christmas trees and decorations in our parks that we put every year, this year we will not put them up,” Gatchalian said in his Facebook post.
Gachalian added that the decision was made to protect the people from acquiring the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) during the holiday season.
“We have to make sure that we do not encourage convergence of people that will cause more COVID transmission,” he added.
He said the city will also forego the traditional food fiesta.
Gatchalian said the city government will focus on spending the city’s resources in the fight against the virus.
“We want to prioritize our COVID response spending – testing, tracing and treatment,” he stressed.
“[We hope] that next year we can go back to regular programming over Christmas. Valenzuelanos thank you for understanding,” Gatchalian added.
