Wild Card trembles from Marcial’s power punches

Freddie Roach’s able Filipino assistant at the Wild Card Boxing Club swears Tokyo Olympics qualifier Eumir Marcial packs dynamite on both hands.

“Madiin at mabigat ang suntok (Strong and heavy punches),” Marvin Somodio told Daily Tribune yesterday from Los Angeles.

Not only is Marcial letting it fly in sparring and in the mitts, but the 25-year-old Zamboanga native is also “very excited to be training at the Wild Card,” Somodio said.

“He’s all pumped up and he easily absorbs what we tell us. He’s a fast learner,” said Somodio, who helps out Hall of Fame promoter Roach in preparing Marcial for his professional debut next month.

Still, Marcial has flaws that need to be addressed.

“He tends to leave himself open (for counters) because whenever he throws combinations, he simply can’t hold back,” Somodio said, noting how Marcial exposed himself to a sneaky counter that floored him during his silver medal finish in the 2019 world championships in Russia.

But overall, Marcial has brought a smile on Roach’s face, Somodio said.
