Saso sizzles with 63, finishes second

Yuka Saso scored a career-best, nine-under par 63 on Sunday to place second in the Toto Japan Classic in Omitama City, Ibaraki Prefecture.

The 19-year-old Filipino-Japanese, who started the day in joint 12th, capped her bogey-free round with three straight birdies to finish the 54-hole tournament on 16-under 200, three shots behind winner Jiyai Shin.

Saso, smarting from a missed cut last week, made her move in the last six holes of the front nine where she made four birdies.

She made back-to-back birdies from the 11th hole before that three-birdie finish.

Shin, who started the day with a one-shot lead over Ayako Kimura, held off Saso with an eagle on 17 and a closing birdie to score a 66 and 19-under 197 total.

Like Saso, Shin completed the round without a bogey.

Japanese No. 1 Nasa Hataoka, Mi-Jeong Jeon and Maiko Wakabayashi shared third place on 14-under 202.

Hataoka, taking advantage of a long LPGA break, shot a 66, Mi-Jeong had a 65 while Wakabayashi returned with a 66.

Ai Suzuki, who won this event last year, shot a 65 for sixth place in a tie with Min-Young Lee (70) and Kimura (71).

Rounding out the Top 10 were Saiki Fujita (69-204), Yuna Nishimura (68-204) and Seonwoo Bae (69-204).
