PALO, Leyte — Ten high school teachers in Salcedo, Eastern Samar were among 157 who tested positive for the coronavirus on Wednesday, bringing the total number of infections in Eastern Visayas to over 7,000.

A husband and a wife of two teachers were also infected as did a mother and her son from the same town.

Salcedo Mayor Melchor Mergal ordered a lockdown starting 5 November until midnight on 9 November for the conduct of contact tracing.

In the adjacent town of General MacArthur, seven relatives and three close contacts of a previously identified COVID positive patient were also found infected with the virus.

In the nearby town of Giporlos, a patient infected three of his relatives and three healthcare workers.

The towns of Salcedo, Gen. MacArthur and Giporlos in Eastern Samar are among those with low cases of COVID infection in the region.

The region also recorded 416 recoveries, the highest in a single day since the start of the pandemic, and two deaths, thus increasing the recovery rate to 90.52 percent and fatality to 66.

The 157 new cases were recorded out of 1,005 laboratory samples tested in Eastern Visayas Regional COVID-19 Testing Center and Divine Word Hospital Virology Laboratory.

Actually, 163 turned out positive but six of them were re-swab of previously identified positive patients.

Among the provinces, Northern Samar recorded the most number of new cases with 80 while Eastern Samar had 32, Leyte with 25, Samar with 10 and Southern Leyte with 3. The independent cities of Tacloban and Ormoc had five and three cases, respectively.

In Northern Samar, the rise of infection has alarmed health officials.

“It is alarming because the number of cases is increasing, however it is still manageable,” said John Paul Roca of the Department of Health regional office.

Roca said the high number of cases can be attributed to the efficiency of the different local government units of Northern Samar in their conduct of contact tracing by identifying and testing the real contacts.

“The LGU are doing their best in terms of contact tracing and we laud it. It shows that they got the true close contact,” he said.
