CLARK — Northport turned to Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger in dismantling Terrafirma, 107-96, in the PBA Philippine Cup on Saturday at the Angeles University Foundation Gym in Angeles City.
Netting 23 points, Standhardinger showed the way for the Batang Pier, who finally barged into the win column after five games by sending the Dyip crashing to their fourth straight defeat in the bubble conference.
Despite the absence of skipper Sean Anthony due to a hamstring injury, Northport stepped up to the plate and let loose Standhardinger and four others who wound up with double digit outputs.
Standhardinger also grabbed 12 rebounds while Kelly Nabong had 18 and eight boards, Garvo Lanete shot 14 and Paolo Taha and rookie Renzo Subido chipped in 12 apiece.
Head coach Pido Jarencio swore his players just got fed up with losing too many games.
“These are really sick of losing (any longer), that’s why many of them really stepped up in this game,” Jarencio said.
Entering the final canto with a 74-71 lead, Northport went to work by posting an 85-78 lead halfway through the final frame behind Nabong ang Taha.
Sensing the game was slowly slipping away, the Dyip responded with Rashawn McCarthy’s back-to-back jumpers shoving Terrafirma to just four at 92-88 with 4:34 remaining.
But Subido came to Northport’s rescue, scoring the team’s next 12 points, including a trey for a 104-90 edge, 1:40 to go.
Still, Jarencio is not about to take it nice and easy.
“We are very happy that we have finally recovered. We finally saw our players elevating and following our game plans, but we just have to be consistent,” Jarencio said.
CJ Perez led his team with 25 points, six rebounds and five assists, as the Dyip became the only winless team left in the conference.
