President Rodrigo Duterte is supporting the passage of a law allowing same-sex civil union in the Philippines, according to Malacañang.
“The President has said it again and again, pabor po siya sa isang batas na magre-recognize sa civil union sa mga parehong kasarian or same-sex,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a televised briefing.
Palace made the reaction after the latest statement of Pope Francis favoring same-sex union.
In a new documentary, the Pope openly supported allowing same-sex couples despite the stand of the Catholic Church against the issue.
“What we have to create is a civil union law,” the Pope said in the film, released in Rome. “That way they are legally covered.”
There are pending bills in Congress pushing for same-sex marriage in the country.
