A policeman and a former soldier died in a shootout while lawmen were trying to arrest the latter in Arakan, North Cotabato, Thursday morning.
Killed were SMSgt. Rofel Manuel, of the Arakan Police, and former Army member Arnold Maligatong, said Col. Henry Villar, North Cotabato provincial police director.
The incident occurred in Sitio Pine Tree, Brgy. Libertad, around 7:45 a.m.
Manuel and other members of the local police were in the area to arrest Maligatong, who was then working as a security guard and was wanted for murder.
After the short chase, the team cornered Maligatong.
As Manuel tried to grab the suspect, the latter fired his gun and hit the policeman who, in turn, retaliated, Villar said.
Manuel and Maligatong were immediately taken to the hospital but were both declared dead by doctors.
Confiscated during the operation were a caliber-.45 pistol and two magazines with eight rounds of live ammunition.
