CLARK — Rookie Adrian Wong made his presence felt on offense but it was veteran Rey Nambatac’s steady hands at the free throw line with 1.3 seconds left that saved the day for Rain or Shine as the ElastoPainters edged NorthPort, 70-68, in the PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the Angeles University Foundation (AUF) Gym here.
The Elasto Painters moved up to a share of the lead beside TNT with their third win in as many outings.
Nambatac broke the backs of the Batang Pier when he sank his two charities with just a second remaining that shattered a 68-68 deadlock after NorthPort made a spirited comeback.
Wong finished with 15 points to lead RoS, which held down NorthPort to just two points the entire third quarter before staving off the Batang Pier’s rally in the payoff period. Sidney Onwubere scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds while Nambatac got 10 points spiked with six boards and six assists.
Christian Standhardinger tied the game at 68 with just three ticks left in the game as NorthPort threatened to force an extension. Nambatac attacked the basket hard and drew a foul for the game-winning free throws.
Standhardinger, Sean Anthony, who scored the lone field goal of NorthPort in the third quarter, and Garvo Lanete posted with 13 points each for the Batang Pier, who fell to a 0-3 hole in the bubble conference.
Anthony found the bottom of the net for NortPort with 6:20 in the third that cut the team’s deficit to 42-40.
