An Abu Sayyaf sub-commander wanted for killings, kidnapping, and bombing was arrested in a raid in Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay early Wednesday.
Arrested was Jamiul Nassalon, also known as Ustad Amih, Abu Harris, Tii, Abu Janar and Jamih, said Brig. Gen. Jesus Cambay Jr., Zamboanga Peninsula regional police director.
Intelligence operatives, along with members of other police units and the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime-Western Mindanao Field Office, carried out the raid and arrest of Nassalon in Brgy. Caliran, around 5:30 a.m.
Nassalon is the subject of warrants for serious illegal detention with ransom, multiple attempted murder, and attempted murder.
According to Cambay, Nassalon was tagged as mastermind of the kidnapping and beheading of Doroteo Gonzales in Zamboanga City in 2009.
Nassalon was also allegedly involved in the killing of eight fishermen in waters off the city on 9 January 2017, strafing of a passenger bus on 14 February the same year, and the bombing of a bus terminal in 2012.
He is currently reorganizing followers to launch terroristic activities in Zamboanga Peninsula, Cambay said.
“These could have succeeded if not for the timely arrest by security forces,” he said.
Nassalon is presently under the custody of Regional Intelligence Unit 9, before he is turned over to the court.
Cambay said police units in the region have intensified their campaign against identified terrorists and those “who are in cahoots with them.”
“We do not want them taking advantage of this pandemic, when our personnel are occupied with enforcement of health protocols,” he added.
