Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said country’s top economist Karl Kendrick Chua is fit to lead the embattled Philippine Health Insurance Company (PhilHealth).
In an interview with reporters, Zubiri said the acting National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) chief has an untarnished reputation and he has the expertise when it comes to finances.
“It’s [unquestionable] po ang kanyang kredebilidad. Pinili ko si Karl because I think, alam mo dati siyang DOF undersecretary. He’s now acting secretary of NEDA. I’ve never heard of any complaint when it comes to his credibility or his work ethic. Napakagaling ng work ethic niya,” he said.
“At numbers guy yan. Talagang nakikita niya yung pinakamaliit na pondo na nailalagay sa iba’t ibang mga sector ng ating budget. So yan ang kailangan natin. Sanay na sa budgeting yang si Karl e,”
“He helped us when we came up with the last three national budgets, he helped us when it came to revenue measures, yung TRAIN and all that so numbers expert siya,” he added.
But the lawmaker said simply replacing the PhilHealth chief would not do wonders to change the state insurance company as long as the mafia exists in the agency.
“Turf war daw yan. Dalawang grupo. So kung ilagay mo diyan si Secreatry Karl Chua, who I know will do a fantastic job, he cannot do it alone…my recommendation is to actually overhaul almost all key positions in PhilHealth para sa gayon ay magkaroon po ng panibagong liderato, clean slate,” he emphasized.
