After reports of the apparent suicide of Benjamin Keough – Lisa Marie Presley’s son and grandson of “The King” Elvis Presley – the public has once again been made aware why depression is a grim predicament that occurs widely without choosing any status.

Depression – a mental-emotional connection – is often a potential driving factor to voluntarily claim their lives, may it be external or internal reasons. And while not much is known about Keough other than the fact that he’s got a super-famous family, it does not hide the fact that the mind a bizarre unchartered territory unfathomed by human science and principles that one cannot easily judge the victim by a simple suicide note or suggestive conclusion.

Here are some foreign celebrities who committed suicide in the past years:

1. Robin Williams

In August 2014, the world learned that beloved actor and comedy star Robin Williams had taken his own life at 63 and it was later revealed that Robin, whom doctors initially thought had Parkinson’s disease, was actually suffering from Lewy body dementia, a brutal progressive brain disorder.

2. Chris Cornell

Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell died by suicide in May 2017 and 52-year-old rocker took his own life in his hotel bathroom after performing with his band in Detroit. He was found lying on the floor with an exercise band around his neck and blood in his mouth.

3. Anthony Bourdain

Celebrity chef and author Anthony Bourdain committed suicide in June 2018 in his hotel in France, where he was filming his show “Parts Unknown.” He was found by his frequent collaborator and friend Éric Ripert of an apparent suicide by hanging in his room at Le Chambard hotel.

4. Chester Bennington

Linkin Park frontman Chester Bennington committed suicide in his California home in July 2017. He was found dead by his housekeeper at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California and his death was ruled a suicide by hanging.

5. Mindy McCready

Country music singer Mindy McCready died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in February 2013 on the front porch of her home — the same place her former boyfriend, the father of one of her sons — had committed suicide a month earlier.

In the Philippine setting, there were also some controversial suicides that were reported, but they are not entirely because of depression.

6. Brian Velasco

Filipino band Razorback drummer Brian Velasco had live streamed his own death on Facebook, as he fell from the 34th floor — ending a long battle with clinical depression. Velasco’s girlfriend Portia Carlos issued an official statement about his controversial death and revealed that he had bipolar disorder.

7. Miko Palanca

The younger brother of actor Bernard Palanca was found lifeless after he allegedly jumped off a building in a residential area in Santolan Town in San Juan. According to the initial reports, the death is a result of an apparent suicide. The actor was also rumored to have been suffering from depression related to his love life.

8. Angelo Reyes

The former Armed Forces chief and Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes was reported to have shot himself at the left side of his body in front of her mother’s grave at the Loyola Memorial Park in Marikina on February 2011. Reyes was reportedly ashamed by the accusations against him during a Senate probe at that time which led to depression.

9. Tyron Perez

Tyron Perez was a Filipino model, actor and television host and an alumnus of the reality-based talent search StarStruck. Perez was found dead inside a car in Barangay Ugong, Valenzuela City on the night of 29 December 2011. It was later confirmed that suicide was the cause of Perez’s death.

10. Kristel Tejada

Kristel Tejada – a University of the Philippines student – committed suicide after failing to pay her tuition. Tejada filed for leave of absence (LOA) at UP Manila a day before she took her own life. At the time of Tejada’s death, UP Manila was enforcing a “no late payment” policy and it sparked the whole nation’s outrage because of the government’s educational “no late payment” policy implemented particularly by UP.

While suicide rates are low in the Philippines, it is still important to note that increases in incidence and relatively high rates in adolescents and young adults point to the importance of focused suicide prevention programs in the country.
