The Korea Herald on late Thursday reported the death of Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, an apparent suicide by the 64-year-old whose body was found at Mount Bukak hours after he was reported missing.
Elected mayor of the South Korean capital in 2011, Park was in his third and final term. He was regarded as a potential presidential candidate for the 2022 election.
Park’s daughter reported he had gone missing after leaving home and shutting off his mobile phone.
About 200 policemen were mobilized to look for the mayor around his home and the nearby temple Gilsangsa in Seongbuk-dong in Seoul. His last location was detected before his phone was shut off.
The mayor did not come to work due to health reasons but it was not stated whether it was a case of a coronavirus infection. Park is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
