Following the denial of the House Legislative Franchises Committee of the franchise bid of ABS-CBN, House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has urged the public to read the resolution that was adopted by the panel.
“As the Committee members have voted to deny the franchise application, the House Leadership asks that the people read the findings carefully in order to appreciate the reasons for their decision,” said Cayetano.
The resolution, which seeks to deny the franchise of ABS-CBN, was crafted by a technical working group composed of Deputy Speaker and Cebu 3rd District Rep. Pablo John Garcia, Camiguin lone District Rep. Xavier Jesus Romualdo and Marikina 2nd District Rep. Stella Luz Quimbo.
It was adopted by the panel with a vote of 70-11.
Cayetano defended the resolution which the TWG issued only a day after it was created and assured the public that “the final resolution was not arrived at by the Committee without serious consideration as to the overall impact it will have on the nation.”
The House Speaker added that from the start, lawmakers have accepted that there will be opposition to the panel’s decision whether it is for or against ABS-CBN.
“Because of the highly partisan nature of this issue, we accepted from the start that there would be those who will vehemently disagree with the committee’s decision, no matter what they resolve.”
Cayetano — who did not cast his vote — has this to say to those who do not agree to the panel’s decision.
“For those who do not agree, at the least, understand why the decision had to be so,” said Cayetano and expressed hopes that the public will respect the decision of the House legislative franchises panel.
“I pray that despite our differences, we will eventually come to respect the decision of the committee and its members, and begin to move forward in rebuilding the relationships that have been strained by this issue,” Cayetano said.
