Two suspected members of a kidnap-for-ransom group, both former policemen, were killed in an alleged shootout with authorities in Binangonan, Rizal, before dawn on Saturday.
Joint operatives from the Philippine National Police-Anti-Kidnapping Group, PNP Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group and Binangonan Municipal Police were providing security to the complainant of a kidnapping incident in Barangay Macamot, Binangonan, when a white van with a spurious plate number allegedly used by the suspects was spotted at about 2 a.m.
The operatives approached the van for verification but the occupants opened fire.
Former Police Officer 1 Rafael Maray, allegedly the leader of the Maray kidnap for ransom group, and former Staff Sgt. Jerry Romero Fabros were killed, while two others escaped.
The complainant and mother of one of three victims, Lydia Santos, and her son’s live-in partner, Monica Morante, sought the assistance of the PNP-AKG after receiving threats from Maray’s group, which they sued for kidnapping and robbery on 10 June 2020.
Since then, Santos said they have been living in constant fear as they began to receive threats and see cars passing near their house.
Santos’ son, Marcial, and his two friends, Joven Francisco and Shane Paul Cruz, were taken from inside their house in Tanawan Valley, Barangay Macamot on 3 June 2020.
Morante has given P200,000 ransom money but the victims remained missing as of posting time.
Santos identified Maray as one of the kidnappers.
Recovered from the crime scene were one Glock pistol, one cal. 45 firearm, one M-16 rifle and a van.
Maray went absent without leave in 2017 after he was involved in robbery-extortion incidents while Fabros was charged for the same offenses two years later, the PNP report stated.
