Phl virus cases surge to 22,474

More than 22,000 individuals in the Philippines have been infected with the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as the Department of Health (DoH) logged 579 additional cases on Monday.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH reported 331 “fresh” and 248 “late” cases—raising the nationwide total to 22,474.

The fresh cases were composed 154 cases from Metro Manila, 156 from Central Visayas, and 60 from other regions, according to the DoH data.

Meanwhile, the 248 late cases were composed of 106 cases from Metro Manila, five from Central Visayas, and 106 from other regions.

The DoH also reported that the number of recoveries increased to 4,637 after the agency saw 107 additional survivors while the death toll rose to 1,011 after eight more patients died.

So far, there are 54 testing centers nationwide that are accredited to administer real-time polymerase chain reaction tests, including GeneXpert laboratories.

Among these facilities are the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine, San Lazaro Hospital, UP National Institutes of Health, Lung Center of the Philippines, Detoxicare and Makati Medical Center.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the Philippines ranked third among all Western Pacific countries with the highest number of confirmed coronavirus cases as of 8 June, next to China and Singapore.

More than 6.3 million individuals worldwide have been reported by the WHO, six months after the first case was reported in China.
