As the epicenter of its country’s pandemic, New York City is far from normalcy.
The Javits Center in Manhattan, supposed venue for this year’s New York International Auto Show which has been the event announcing the World Car Awards winners since 2006, is now a massive intensive care unit for about 3,000 COVID-19 patients.
But this wouldn’t stop the award-giving body from revealing 2020’s winners of the World Car Awards through social media.
The World Car Awards, now on its 16th year, is composed of 86 automotive journalists from 24 countries. It is an independent entity and is not tied to any publication.
World Urban Car
The Kia Soul EV, which the Daily Tribune was able to chance at the 2020 Singapore Motor Show in January, was named the winner for this year’s World Urban Car. The Korean top vehicle bested, among other contenders, the Mini Cooper SE and the Volkswagen T-Cross.
World Performance Car
This would be the popular suave athletes of the bunch, wherein the BMW M8, Toyota GR Supra, Porsche 718 Spyder/Cayman GT4 and the Porsche 911 made it as finalists. But clearly ahead of the pack is the electric prodigy Porsche Taycan, this year’s World Performance Car.
World Luxury Car
Again, the Porsche Taycan reigned supreme in this category, beating battery-electric Mercedes-Benz EQC and fellow brother Porsche 911. The judges, I believe, were head over heels for the Taycan’s extraordinary performance and environment-sustainability features.
World Car Design of the Year
The 2020 Mazda3, the first vehicle to feature the Evolved Kodo design, captured the hearts of the jurors as it received the World Car Design of the Year honor. The vehicle’s prestigious styling which exudes elegance in a minimalist form outclassed those from the likes of the Alpine 110S, Peugeot 208 and the favorite Porsche Taycan.
World Car of the Year
The much-coveted honor belonged to the Kia Telluride. It emerged at the top after besting finalists, such as the Hyundai Sonata, Kia Soul EV, Ranger Rover Evoque, Mercedes-Benz GLB, Volkswagen Golf and T-Cross. Runners-up areMazda3 and CX-3.
