Days after drawing flak for going out despite experiencing coronavirus disease 2019 symptoms, Senator Aquilino Pimentel III is now a father to a girl with his second wife, laywer Kathryna Yu-Pimentel.
In a Facebook post, Mrs. Pimentel expressed gratitude for her “second life” after surviving an emergency cesarean section to give birth to Baby Helena.
“I am grateful for my second life. [I] and Baby Helena survived a miracle emergency C-section delivery last March 29, 2020 (8 pm). Thank you to all of those who helped us, sacrificed and risked themselves just to save my life and baby Helena,” Mrs. Pimentel wrote.
She acknowledged all the doctors and the hospital, which she did not specify, that “took care” of them “with open arms.”
“Unexpected people really helped us during our time of life & death crisis. You are all our angels sent from above. In time po, when all this crisis is finished we will pay it forward to all of you,” she added.
Mrs. Pimentel’s delivery, scheduled 25 March, was put on hold after she was exposed to her husband, who later tested positive for COVID-19.
The Pimentel couple went to Makati Medical Center (MMC) around 7 p.m. on 24 March for Mrs. Pimentel’s non-stress test in preparation for her delivery.
Pimentel was informed through a phone call that he was virus-positive around 9 p.m. on the same night while still at the hospital.
Mrs. Pimentel was forced to postpone her delivery as the doctors wanted her tested for COVID-19 first.
The senator refused to disclose the result of Mrs. Pimentel’s COVID-19 test, invoking her right to privacy.
MMC denounced Pimentel’s “reckless” action saying the lawmaker breached quarantine protocols and risked the lives of the medical workers and other patients in the hospital.
The day after, it was also confirmed that Pimentel went to a grocery store in Taguig. He apologized for going out, saying he wasn’t certified as positive yet at that time and merely wanted to be with his wife.
