House Committee on Appropriations Chairman and ACT-CIS Partylist Representative Eric Yap said he tested positive for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a statement released on Wednesday.
“It is with a heavy heart that I share to all of you that I tested positive for coronavirus,” said Yap, who added that he was tested last 15 March and the result of the test was released just today.
Yap said he underwent testing because he was exposed to COVID-19 positive individuals.
Last 10 March, Yap presided a hearing of the appropriations panel on the bill seeking supplemental budget for the Health department while on 21 March, he attended a meeting in Malacañang together with other Congress leaders to discuss the bill on COVID-19 response.
Yap also attended the special session of the House of Representatives on the bill that would give President Rodrigo Duterte additional powers to combat COVID-19 just last Monday.
Before he attended the past two events, he said he asked the Department of Health for his test results but he was told it was not yet out.
“I attended the meeting and was careful the whole time knowing that I could potentially be a carrier of the virus.
Yap appealed to the public to stay home saying everyone could be infected by COVID-19.
“Lower risk does not mean no risk. This is a minor setback for me but it will not stop me from fulfilling my duties and responsibilities. Let’s all rise from this together.”
Yap’s announcement came only hours after Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel said he tested positive for COVID-19.
