The Manila Police District-Traffic Enforcement Unit (MPD-TEU) is preparing criminal charges against the driver of a sports utility vehicle (SUV) after allegedly unintended sudden acceleration caused him to ram and kill a woman and injure six pedestrians in Raon, Sta. Cruz Manila.

Charges of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide will be slapped against the suspect, Jose Pableo, 28, of Sitio Antipolo, Bagac, Bataan, before the Manila Prosecutor’s Office.

Police identified the victim as Marides Sung Co, 54, of Greenfield, Quezon City, who died at the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center after being run over by the vehicle.

The other victims were taken to various hospitals for medical intervention.

Sonny Santoña, 56, who was on board the vehicle with his relatives when the accident happened, said when the suspect started the vehicle’s engine, they heard a loud noise before it sped off backwards, resulting in the accident.

After a brief investigation and based on the recovered closed circuit television footage from Salonga Music Store, it was discovered that the victim was buying some goods in front of the store when she was hit on the back by the vehicle.

Her body slammed into the store because of the impact.

The family of the suspect had promised to shoulder the medical expenses of the victims and the funeral cost of the fatality.

Traffic investigators will also look into the vehicle for possible defects and inform its manufacturer.
