Leyte Fourth District Representative Lucy Torres Gomez recently underscored the need for a Department for Disaster Resilience in light of the recent plight of the victims of the Taal Volcano eruption.
In her privilege speech during the special and historic out-of-town House plenary session at the Batangas City Convention Center, Gomez reported what has transpired during the evacuation and relief efforts of the government for the Taal eruption victims.
Gomez – who is also the chairman of the House Committee on Disaster Preparedness – shared her experience on the government efforts when super typhoon Yolanda hit her province years ago.
A total of 204 House Members responded to the roll call, showing support for the affected residents and it was a productive session as the House was also able to adopt House Resolution No. (HR) 655, urging the immediate release of funds for the programs and efforts that shall aid those affected by the eruption, and HR 662, expressing the support and commitment of the House of Representatives to work with all concerned agencies to pass the supplemental budget to expedite the effective and responsive assistance to the victims.
